My friend tried dermal estradiol to gain weight in specefic places? She did that for 6 months..She was sucess ful in gaining weight.Do you think she will continue to be healthy for long .Will it cause ny harm to her.Do you think it has changed her body and it is wronged? specific spelling mistake

Holly W replied: "How old is your friend? Estradiol, which is Estrogen, is a hormone and yes it would cause weight gain but not in specific areas of the body. The weight gain may be from water retention and will be short lived. I wouldn't consider it a safe or healthy way to change a person's appearence and it does carry serious side effects. Your friend might be better off trying something else, like accepting herself as she is."

finaldx replied: "There is far too little information contained in this question to be able to give a cogent answer. How on earth did she get a prescription for transdermal estradiol without a physician being involved in the transaction? If a doctor was involved, what was it given for? What age is your friend? Has she gone through puberty? How low was her weight? What is her hormone status? Does she have any underlying medical conditions or problems? Estradiol is the most prescribed "medication" today. If it were intrinsically harmful, in and of itself, it probably would not enjoy the popularity it does, but, like any drug, can be abused."

Is weight gain associated with taking Estradiol (Estrogen)? I take a very small dose after having had a full hysterectomy and oophorectomy 3 years ago. I am 37. I have noticed gradual weight gain in the last couple years and am wondering if the two are related. The weight gain also seems to be mostly in my abdominal area. I have gained about 30 pounds in the last 2-3 years but have not changed my lifestyle, i.e. diet or exercise.

Fly on the Wall replied: "Calcium restricts hormone that causes belly fat in menopausal women maybe that hormone is targeting you due surgery you have had and taking calcium supplement will help"

Does switching to a higher dosage of birth control cause weight gain? I am switching from ortho tricyclen lo to trinessa because it is cheaper. Will trinessa make me gain more weight? I noticed that the amount of norgestimate in the two are the same but there is .01mg more of ethinyl estradiol in the trinessa. Could that cause weight gain?

scarlet_macaw15 replied: "no. .01 mg extra in your medicine wont cause you to gain weight."

sweetpinkbee replied: "no not at all"

aa replied: "yes, it does affect your appetite and your water retention, so your weight. check with your doc what the side effects are."

Boggy replied: "It could do, but, not as much as being pregnant. Stop worrying."

VCC replied: "I found the higher the hormone level (the estrogen level) the more water retention you get"

Heather1222 replied: "It's possible, but it probably won't make you gain weight. If you do gain weight, it will probably just be 5 lbs. or something like that."

Will taking Estradiol 0.5mg tablets help me feel better ? I'm going through perimenopause and have been having the symptoms of mood swings, insomnia, irregular periods, gaining weight for no apparent reason skin is sagging in the face, brain fog or being just plain forgetful ( I feel like an idiot at times & like I'm falling apart ). I'm told I should embrace the changes going on in my life...UHM...I'm usually very optimistic, but I feel like crap and can't embrace that ! Will this medication help me feel better or worse ? Will I end up gaining more weight ? I'm already depressed and don't want to gain more weight, that certainly won't help with my depression. I am already taking Wellbutrin SR ( for 4 yrs ) for the depression, but it has stopped working. I guess I'm just wanting to know the pros and cons of this medication. One hears so many different things about HRT that it's very confusing. My mother also died of breast cancer but this did not seem to concern my GYN. Any advice would be appreciated. Thank you ! I did discuss the questions I have with my Dr . Hence I told him My Mother died of breast cancer and it didn't phase him. I ask him everything I ask here. I really wanted an opinion from someone that has taken the medication or really has some legit info. on it. Again, I realize everyone reacts differently to meds. I still would like to know how it effected others. Thanks for the attempt at answering my question " he who cares ".

He cares replied: "Discuss it with your doctor"

Is there a nonprescription estrogen replacement therapy that does not have appetite inducing properties? I have been on estradiol valerate (plant-based estrogen) injections for nearly a year. It increased my overall sense of well-being, but ... it has 'an appetite inducing property'. Since I am disabled and on a narcotic, I have a lot of problems w/ digestion/elimination, cannot exercise, and cannot endure the weight gain.

D. A replied: "Solgar makes a very good soy isoflavone supplement called Genistein. It works for me."

JustMe replied: "I would suggest Menopause Balance Complex. This is a natural supplement with no negative side effects. This complex uses compounds found in plants - called phytoestrogens - to ease mood swings, sleeplessness, and hot flashes associated with menopause. Provides soy isoflavones and flaxseed lignans, phytoestrogens currently being studies for heart, bone, and breast health. In as few as 30 day or less, these natural herbs - centuries old, but now clinically studied - help relieve the common systems of menopause. A friend of mine will not be without the Menopause Balance Complex and it has not affected her appetite at all. Also, I would suggest all natural Optiflora (Two-Product System with Prebiotic & Probiotic) for your digestion/elimination problems. Taken regularly, it helps maintain a healthy colon and digestive system. This advanced two-product system uses new technology to protect beneficial microflora during the rigors of shipping, storage, and the acidic journey through your stomach. Other products claim live microflora at the time of manufacture. This product guarantees the delivery of live microflora to your colon. I regularly use this product. For more info or questions, please feel free to contact me. Best Wishes"

drvandenhoek replied: "My advice is to look into bioidentical hormone replacement therapy. This is a natural method that first uses some simple lab test to determine your exact hormone amounts (estrogen/estriol/etc) so that you don't nock the other hormones out of balance. I know of one company that I work with and send my patients to - Good luck"

Is it bad to take hormones (birth control pills) for acne? i take diane-35 which contains 2 mg cyproterone acetate (an anti-androgen) and 35 mcg ethinyl estradiol for 21 days with a 7 day break. im not sexually active yet so i only take it for my acne..i was just wondering if i should take two a day to make my acne go away faster? i'm 15/f/have irregular periods and im a healthy weight (even though ive gained 2 lbs after going on diane-35) is it bad to take too much hormones? what are the side effects?

daisy replied: "Okay many people take birth control for things other than being sexually active. I take mine for acne and control of my periods. It's good to be on it for those type of things. What birth control does is regulate your hormones which cause acne and causes you period cycle. DO NOT TAKE MORE THAN ONE A DAY...it will mess up your cycle even more and put you at risk for side effects even more so...the best way to have these things be normal is to take it the same time everyday and only take the recommended dose (usually one pill for birth control).....They make take a few months, but you should see improvements...Good luck!"

SAMI replied: "They are good for Acne."

groopy g replied: "it's better to check a doctor before taking any meds ! because he can do some tests and give you the right ones . it's bad to take them on your own . you cand do harm to your body"

Christy B replied: "Oral contraceptives (birth control pills) are used in treating acne to reduce the amount of androgen acting on the skin and oil glands. Though only a few specific brands have been tested and shown to decrease acne, it is thought that any estrogen containing oral contraceptive would have the same effect. They don't work on the skin specifically (like a topical medicine like benzoyl peroxide) but work on the entire body to reduce the amount of free testosterone running around the body. Since testosterone can act on the skin to cause increased oil production, reducing the amount of testosterone can, over time, reduce the amount of acne that you develop after 6-9 months of use, 30-60% decrease in acne). The hormone system in the body is very tricky and just adding more estrogen does not necessarily mean you get better results. Taking 2 pills a day will not make your acne go away faster, but it may cause increased side effects (nausea, mood changes, breast tenderness, breakthrough bleeding, increased risk of stroke and heart attack). You should consider some therapies other than oral contraceptives including topical medications (like benzoyl peroxide, retinoids, antibiotics). You should discuss these with your doctor as some of them require a prescription and most people use the over the counter products improperly leading to over-drying. Keep your chin up. Most people will grow out of their acne eventually (though I do know that not all do) and there are a great number of options for treatment."

theworldsbestbusiness replied: "for acne take wild yam root. and drink lot's of water, also clean your face with witch hazel."

rain replied: "I was watching A&E TV show. They had experts on the show. It was all about this new birth control in short is a must to be on. Not only will it help acne. It also protects a women from becoming the worst person to be around due to the Hormone changes in the body. We all get weird. Very mean. It's not are fault! This new pill will help you to become yourself again. The acne seems to go away. The bloating and the horrible pain really go away. Plus get on good vitamin and mineral program. Lots of water all the time. Also al the Dr.s agreed to make a Daily Diary for two months. This will help the Dr. to pin point when the Acne begins to apear more. The mood swings. Because of the early bloating and Hormone Changes. I don't know the name of this NEW PILL. Just tell your Dr. They should know the name!! Good luck."

conski replied: "well, first of all the side effect would be gaining weight..esp. on the boobs..a lil bit of nausea, some blood spots..but the good effect would be,it will eliminate acne if u have some,it will regulate your menstrual period..I am also taking the same brand..but if you feel that the brand doesnt suit u,ask your doctor to change brand..thanks!"

Does Prozac interact with the Birth Control Pill? hi everyone, i recently switched from taking celexa to prozac (active ingredient: fluoxetine) about 4 weeks ago. My doctor slowly weened me off of celexa (40mg) and put me on prozac (20mg). i'm also on ocella (active ingredient:drospirenone-ethinyl estradiol) as birth control. over the past 2-3 weeks i have been getting nauseous every afternoon, but not to the point of throwing up. i've gained weight, which is why my doctor took me off of celexa and put me on prozac, but the weight is still piling on (i've gained about 2-3 lbs in the past month). do you think there may be an interaction between the prozac and ocella? is that even possible? i trust my doctor wouldn't have put me on the prozac if it interacted with anything, but i have NOT been feeling well the past few weeks. any ideas? thanks everyone : )

Justin K replied: "There should be not problems with Prozac and the birth control, but always check the drug fact sheet just to be sure. Everytime my wife restarts her Prozac she goes through the same period of nausea. It is a very common side effect of the medication. some people can't take it do the side effects, so ask you doctor about other alternatives."

Help with Mirena IUD vs. oral contraceptive!!!? I am currently taking Alesse and am experiencing the side effect of weight gain and bloating. Which hormone is responsible for this reaction, levonorgestrel or ethinyl estradiol? The Mirena iud realeases levonorgestrel in smaller doses, so would that reduce this side effect? Thanks

Kevin H replied: "Mirena IUD is estrogen free, so there is no weight gain."

doodlebuttus replied: "The hormones in Mirena are the lowest in any hormonal birth control on the market. They are also isolated in the uterus, so there are fewer side effects. Long term studies have shown no connection between Mirena and weight gain. I have been using Mirena for a few years, and I haven't had any weight gain. This is very unusual for me, as almost every other birth control I used made me gain. I hope this helps. If you have any other questions, feel free to email me!"

I just found out that I'm six months pregnant but I've been taking birth control all this time? Will this affect my baby? The reason I didn't realize that I was pregnant was because I wasn't showing, just gaining weight all over, and I also I never have periods (I don't take the placebo pills in my birth control pack) so the signs weren't there for me. I didn't even have any morning sickness. The birth control I'm taking is called Diane-35 (35 mcg ethinyl estradiol and 2 mg cyproterone acetate). I know that cyproterone acetate is supposed to be an anti-androgen and I was prescribed it for my acne. From my scan they're 99% sure that the baby is a girl. Will she be ok??? My GP said that it should be ok because the 2mg cyproterone is only a tiny amount and the baby is a girl but I haven't been to see a specialist gynaecologist yet (my appt is next week).

Kimberly C replied: "There is no medical evidence to suggest that birth control pills will hurt a baby, so don't worry. Congrats. =)"

Mamatobe replied: "you'll be fine, this is something you should have asked your doctor.. good luck and congratulations i'm surprised you didn't know you were pregnant by the symptoms...crazy!"

missy replied: "it would probably be best to talk to your Dr about it. If the ppl doing the scan didn't seemed concerned and everything look normal then i would be concerned"

emmettlovee replied: "did you tell the doctor ... um. my mom took birth control for about 4 months till she found out and it didn't really do anything other then the fact i was really small and have Asama"

Maureen replied: "The birth control won't hurt her. Once the zygote implants then BC won't harm it. However the acne medication in the pill might be harmful. Talk to your doctor and he or she will tell you if you should be concerned about anything."

juliaces mommy replied: "wow ummm...that is really in the air because birth control has hormones and other things in it that could be harmful. If the did an ultrasound already they would have checked to see certain problems such as malfunctioning organs, and they will do bloodwork for down syndrome and things like that. Talk to your doctor at you next visit about everything. I really wish you the best of luck & congrats!"

amanda [may12. team blue!] replied: "didn't u feel her moving?"

not ttc but still hoping replied: "Go and Talk to ur doctor asap; yahoo answer can't tell u... By the way congratzz I hope the baby is fine and ur self 2"

Harriet replied: "AFAIK there's no proof that birth control pills taken during pregnancy cause any birth defects, but you're not supposed to take Diane 35 while pregnant. The leaflet says that but doesn't say what could happen. It's possible the anti-androgen component could have an affect on the developing foetus. Defintiely discuss this with your doctor. Hopefully it'll be ok. Did you miss any pills or anything? That sucks if it failed for you for no reason. Sorry. Harriet"

doginneed replied: "I would highly suggest stopping the pills if you haven't already. I did some research and it certainly states that you MUST not take the medication if you are or think you are pregnant. There is always a possibly for birth defects, low birth weight, mental disorder, etc. I'm sure if you have gone to your doctor already they are well aware of the seriousness of the situation and will make sure to check as much as they possible can. I would read the article listed below...It lists some of the possible conditions that can occur from taking the medication and becoming pregnant. "
